PPP lauds Supreme Court for Montie judgement

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has lauded the Supreme Court for its sentencing of two radio panellists and a presenter to four months in jail each.

The party says the sentencing could be an antidote to the politics of intimidation, violence and abusive words.

The Court on Wednesday, July 27 pronounced judgement on Alistair Tairo Nelson and Godwin Ako Gunn as well as host of Montie FM’s Pampaso, Salifu Maase, after they in one way or the other threatened to kill judges.

“The court has upheld the rule of law and the dignity of the judiciary,” a statement issued by the second largest opposition party said.

“We urge the court to continue to be a vanguard of our fledgling democracy.”

But the party was concerned the Attorney General by the design of the country’s constitution was rendered inefficient in taking the matter up.

“The trial of the trio and the directors of the company had to be at the instance of the court itself since the Attorney General was disabled by partisanship to take up the matter of threat of harm and detah on members of the judiciary.”

It said even the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) attempted to calm tempers. “It is obvious that the AG was not interested in addressing the assault on the judges to bring sanity in our political discourse.

“It is time for Ghana to separate the Attorney General from the Minister of Justice.”
