Nominations for Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election open

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Thursday, January 10, opened nominations for Member of Parliament (MP) aspirants for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election.

The nominations will run until Saturday, January 12, 2019.

As at 1200 hours that the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the Ayawaso District Office of the Electoral Commission, none of the aspirants had filed their nominations.

Mr Alex Oppong Poku, a staff of the EC, told the GNA that the nominations would be received at the Office between 0900 hours to 1200 hours and 1400 hours to 1700 hours each day.

He said the aspirants were expected to pay a filing fee of GH¢10,000.

Mrs Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the EC, in a statement, said the nomination for each candidate shall be witnessed by the signature of two registered voters, as proposer and seconder and supported by 18 other registered voters in the Constituency as assenting to the nomination.

She said the nomination form shall be endorsed with the candidate’s consent.

The candidate shall, at the time of submitting the nomination, provide the Returning Officer with two copies of a recent post card size photograph taken against a red background, adding that the photograph should reveal the full face and ears of the candidate.

Madam Lydia Alhassan, Widow of the late Emmanuel Kyeremanten Agyarko, the former MP for the area, won the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency primaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

The National Democratic Congress elected Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong to lead the Party in the by-election.

The by-election is scheduled for Thursday, January 31, 2019 following the death of the MP.
