Former Deputy Trades Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately allowing Member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency Kennedy Agyapong to discredit the works of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Murtala Mohammed, who was speaking on TV3‘s New Day on Tuesday, said the actions of Kennedy Agyapong are well masterminded by the NPP to divert attention from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“This attempt is done ostensibly to deflect attention from the issue and to stifle public discourse in the allegations made by Kwesi Nyantakyi captured in the Anas investigation on no less a person than the President and his Vice,” the former Deputy Trades Minister said.

His comments come on the back of events leading to the release of an investigative piece by Anas Aremeyaw Anas on corruption within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) which captures the name of President Akufo-Addo.

President of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi is captured in the yet-to-be-aired video fraudulently using the President’s name to transact business.

President Akufo-Addo subsequently reported the GFA president by the Police CID for investigations into the matter.

Weeks after these developments, the Assin North MP has been in the news with various allegations against the works and credibility of Anas Aremeyaw Anas. Speaking on the issue, the former Nanton MP said the NPP planned to discredit Anas in order to protect the President’s integrity.

“All these things are done ostensibly to discredit Anas so that they can find some cover for the President and the Vice President because what is exposed in the video is so damning to the integrity of the person they described as incorruptible.”

‘Needless attack’

He further described as amateurish the deliberate attempt by the NPP to deflect and stifle public discourse on issues raised in the investigative piece.

Murtala Mohammed also criticized the NPP and its leadership for failing to call Kennedy Agyapong to order for his allegations and attacks on Anas.

“At the time Kennedy Agyapong started attacking the credibility of Anas, no single leading member of the NPP questioned the needless attack on Anas until [Monday, June 4] when the Minority Leader made comments.”

He added that no amount of desperate attempts by the NPP will clear them of corruption allegations.

“It was masterminded by the government, and Kennedy Agyapong was willing to do their bidding, and when the thing backfired, they then went back and said let us find another strategy and that strategy is let bring Mahama and the NDC into the picture,” Murtala Mohammed said.
