The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has emphasized the need for mosquito coils to be distributed to vulnerable persons in lockdown areas alongside the hot meal being served them.

According to him, most of these poor persons living in slums in areas affected by the lockdown are not able to sleep in the evening without mosquito coils to ward off the biting insect.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Faith-based Organizations and other public-spirited individuals are distributing cooked foods to vulnerable persons within locked-down areas of Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Kasoa.

The Ministry has disclosed it is collaborating with faith-based organizations to help in the distribution of food to some 400,000 Ghanaians.

The government had earlier announced the provision of food and shelter for 15,000 head porters popularly known as ‘Kaayayei’ and Persons With Disability (PWDs) following the current COVID-19 lockdown.

But speaking to Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5FM, Nana Obiri Boahen stated that sharing of food and water without giving out mosquito coils will not make life comfortable for these vulnerable persons during the lockdown period.

‘My suggestion is that when they are sharing these foods to the vulnerable, there are some deprived areas where there’s the need to share mosquito coil as well. The authorities have lost sight of the fact that there are several communities in Accra and Kumasi where people are not able to sleep at night without lighting mosquito coil to ward off mosquitos. They are sharing food and water but the mosquito coil is equally very important and the authorities should avert their minds to this.”
