Law School Exam: Only 64 qualify to the bar out of 450 students

Out of four hundred and fifty (450) students who sat fir the Ghana Law School exams, only sixty-four (64) representing 14% passed to be called to the Bar.

This was disclosed by Law School liberalization activist Prof Stephen Kwaku Asare popularly known as Kwaku Azar.

According to him, those students who failed the law exam could have easily passed in any jurisdiction, warning the situation has reached crisis level.

Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the entrance exams and subsequent interviews are illegal and the General Legal Council should go to Parliament for a legal framework for their entrance requirements.

Only about 450 out of 2,000 LLB graduates are deemed ready to proceed to take the professional education.

Of these 450, only 64 pass, 177 are referred and 284 fail.

Put another way, only 64 of 2,000 LLB are able to pass the professional exam, not to even practice but to embark on an additional 6 months of tutelage.

After 10+ years of education, millions of cedis of investment, thousands of hours of tuition, etc., only 3.2% become eligible for tutelage? This is an indictment of the GLC and those in charge of legal education in the country.

Here is what I know. If you exported the 2,000 students to any jurisdiction, other than Ghana, over 70% of them will successfully qualify as lawyers in a shorter time. So the problem, at least at its core, cannot lie with the students.

If our leaders don’t see this as a problem then I don’t know what they see it as.
