Former President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to fully participate in the ‘aagbe w?’ demonstration today, Thursday, 7 February 2019.

“I welcome the initiative of the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty and I encourage all members of the NDC to participate in tomorrow’s demonstration. Let’s show to the world that we stand for peace and that the violence displayed in AWW has no place in our democracy,” Mr Mahama tweeted.

The protest, put together by members of the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, stems from the violent incident that temporarily disrupted the voting process at La-Bawaleshie during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on Thursday, 31 January 2019.

National Security operatives shot and wounded several members of the main opposition National Democratic Congress at the party’s candidate’s private residence just about an hour into the by-election.

The coalition explained that the protest is meant to pile pressure on the government to check the level of insecurity in the country, which they say is threatening Ghana’s democracy.

“We announced our intention to embark on a massive demonstration dubbed ‘aagbe w?’ demonstration to draw public attention to the looming threat on our democracy, peace and stability as well as to press further our demand for proper and speedy investigations into events of last Thursday’s by-election,” the coalition announced earlier this week.

‘Aagbe w?’ means ‘They are killing us’.
