Prior to becoming the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Jean Mensa has been against the idea of compiling a new voters' register, according to the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Otokunor.

He is therefore surprised at her sudden volte-face.

The NDC is up in arms with the EC over its decision to compile a new voters’ register. Even though the Commission has set June ending to embark on the exercise, some members of the Communication team of the NDC believe it will not be successful.

Chaotic System

Brogya Genfi of the NDC has predicted that the exercise will flop. According to him, the system will be chaotic to the extent that the registration will be abandoned midway.

Peter Otokunor, on the other hand, does not understand why the EC Boss is adamant.

According to him, there is no other justification for this U-turn other than the fact that she is being manipulated by the ruling government.

Jean Mensa who was then at IEA said in a report that it is not good to continuously change the register, however, measures must be put in place to do a sustained registration were Ghanaians who turn 18 will walk into the EC offices to register.

“What has changed now for her to change her mind,” he sought to know.

Otokunor further explained that their continuous agitation against the electoral body is to prevent "the Electoral Commission from the control of the President. They are just doing the direct bidding of the President. They take directions from the President.’

He was speaking in a one-on-one interview on Neat FM.
