Former president of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has expressed disappointment about the spike in the country’s cases, attributing same to the insufficient and rather ‘failed’ measures being implemented by the Akufo-Addo led government to contain the spread of the virus.

He made the statement in reaction to the sharp increase of the coronavirus cases from 3,091 to 4,012 in a span of 24 hours, as recorded on May 8, 2020; the highest number of infections recorded at a go since Ghana’s first two cases about two months ago.

“From 3,091 to 4,012 #COVID19 cases within 24 hours; government is certainly failing the people of Ghana,” he said.

According to him, the sharp increase in the confirmed coronavirus cases has got many Ghanaians panicking. He advised that the virus is very real so citizens should not take it for granted.

“Fear gripped many homes last night when the latest confirmed cases were released. And that is understandable. #COVID19 is real, my brothers and sisters,” he said.

He further encouraged Ghanaians to take responsibility for their safety by strictly adhering to the precautionary measures to protect themselves from the dreadful virus.

“I want to encourage you to protect yourself. Regular hand washing with soap & under running water is a must. Stay Home but if you have to go out for any reason including work, wear your mask, take along a hand sanitizer, & always disinfect commonly used and touched surfaces,” he concluded.

The Greater Accra region is leading with 3,436 cases and the Ashanti region following with 210 cases.
