Don’t try to emulate 1978 team, use your own approach - J.E Sarpong tells C.K Akonnor

Veteran tactician J.E Sarpong has called on Black Stars coach C.K Akonnor to adopt a tactical philosophy that will fit his style of play.

Akonnor remarked some weeks ago that he will adopt the tactical formation used by Ghana’s victorious 1978 Africa Cup of Nations team.

In responding to Akonnor’s statement, coach Sarpong says the former Wolfsburg skipper needs to make his mark with his own tactical approach rather than emulating the 1978 team.

“It is good that he is being ambitious with winning the AFCON title. Times have changed and what happened in 1978 is different from what is happening now. Players who played in 1978 are different from those playing currently,” Sarpong told Happy FM.

“The type of players in the team will also influence your style of play so he should play to the ability and capabilities of the players.”

“CK Akonnor should tread cautiously. He is a very young coach and everything he says about winning the AFCON will be judged”, he added.
