Demolition exercise during lockdown insensitive - Tema East NDC

The Tema East branch of the National Democratic Congress has expressed worry over the current demolishing exercise in Tema Metropolis during the partial lockdown in some part of the country.

According to the party, the action can only be described as “insensitive to the plight of the ordinary people of the Tema metropolis” by the TMA boss.

In a statement by the secretary, Seidu Abdulai said “We were completely shocked that in the midst of this economic difficulty particularly, in this lockdown, the TMA boss will proceed to demolish container shops and thereby further deepening the woes of the long-suffering people of Tema. We are already overwhelmed with the bad political leadership in Tema East, but to think that the Metropolitan Chief Executive will take this decision in the midst of this lockdown is irresponsible, to say the least.“

The Tema East branch of the National Democratic Congress wish to express our utmost disgust at the rather insipid, and blatant display of insensitivity to the plight of the ordinary people of the Tema metropolis by the TMA boss, Hon Felix Mensah Nii Annang-La

We were completely shocked that in the midst of this economic difficulty particularly, in this lockdown, the TMA boss will proceed to demolish container shops and thereby further deepening the woes of the long suffering people of Tema. We are already overwhelmed with bad political leadership in Tema East, but to think that the Metropolitan Chief Executive will take this decision in the midst of this lockdown is irresponsible to say the least.

Firstly, most of the people who operate the shops are locked down and cannot even come out to salvage their goods and property they had stocked in these shops.

Secondly, these shops are their main source of livelihood, and since the lock down is in place, they don't open them. Which implies that, as they were thinking about how to provide for themselves and their families, the MCE rather decides to compound their problems by burdening them with the cost of transportation to nowhere...

Thirdly, many of them have nowhere to go considering the time you ask them to vacate the place.

We appreciate the need to renovate the Tema Community One (1) main station but, the timing is completely wrong and lacks any form of human face nor spirit of humanitarianism being extended to the victims before this ruthless act was meted out to them. This singular act, especially in these difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic is an affront to government's policy of providing aid and relief items to the citizenry in order to ease the burden on them. So the excuse of renovating the station at a time when it will rather end up putting more people in a state of financial difficulties and desolations is erroneous and unconvincing.

We are, however, asking the TMA boss, in order not to worsen the plight of his constituents to defer the works, until the time our nation returns to its normal times after the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the MCE must bear in mind that we will use all legitimate means available to us to fight against these acts of callousness, cruelty and barbarism being meted out to the vulnerable people in the constituency.
