The Sekyere Central District Assembly has set up a COVID-19 relief fund to solicit financial assistance to support the fight against the outbreak of the virus in the area.

Mr Kwadwo Banahene Bediako, District Chief Executive (DCE) speaking at a ceremony to launch the fund at Nsuta, said it would complement efforts by the government in the areas of providing logistics and equipment for the fight.

He said though the government had already provided GHC 168,000.00 to the assembly to finance capital expenditures on the pandemic, the setting up of the district fund would help raise local financial support to supplement that of the central government.

This, Mr. Bediako said would strengthen the district’s capacity to get all the necessary equipment and logistics to ensure that the virus did not enter the area.

He appealed to residents in the district to strictly adhere to all the preventive and restrictive protocols outlined by the government and the Ghana Health Service to prevent them from catching and spreading the virus in the communities.

Mr Kwame Asafo Adjei, Member of Parliament for Nsuta -Kwamang Beposo advised the public to refrain from politicising the measures put in place by the government to control the spread of the virus.

Nana Baah Boadi, a sub-chief at Nsuta traditional area pledged the support of the traditional leaders in the district towards the fund and all measures implemented by the government to contain the outbreak of the virus.

The DCE donated GHC 5,000.00, as seed money for the fund, which is to be managed by a three-member committee, under the chairmanship of Dr. Frank Adae Bonsu, a private medical Consultant.

Other pledges were made by Mr Adjei, the MP of the area, Madam Adelaide Yaa Agyeiwaa, NPP Parliamentary aspirant for the constituency, the constituency office of the NPP and some other public-spirited persons in the district.

In a related development, Mr Bediako inaugurated the district office of the National Ambulance Service and the commencement of operations of the Service in the district.

He appealed to the people to call the Service only when they needed emergency service and desist from resorting to prank calls.
