3 sacked UEW lecturers reinstated; school re-opens April 8

The Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has reinstated three lecturers sacked by the Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni.

The lecturers, Prof. Ephraim Avea Nsoh, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, and Dr. Frimpong Kwaku Duku are to resume their duties in the university from Thursday, 4 April 2019.

The student body and alumni were unhappy with the sacking of the lecturers and embarked on a series of protests, one of which turned violent leading to the temporary closure of the school.

The V-C cited misconduct and insubordination among other reasons, for sacking the lecturers who denied any wrongdoing.

The students and alumni and members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) called for the resignation of Prof. Afful-Broni, since, according to them, the V-C was victimising staff of the university who are against his appointment.

The Governing Council, in a statement, said it finds the current state of affairs very worrying on the following grounds:

1. The current state of affairs is attracting negative reportage for the University on the media landscape, which does not augur well for institutional branding and development.

2. The Governing Council acknowledges that it has the ultimate responsibility to ensuring that lasting peaceful environment for academic work is established on our campuses.

To this end the Council said upon advice and permission from the Regional Security Council it will re-open the University on Monday, 8 April 2019 while Mid-Semester Examinations begin on Tuesday, 9 April 2019 to Friday, 12 April 2019.
