Some Ghanaian celebrities have taken to social media to express shock over the sudden death of Kofi Annan.

The diplomat died aged 80, Saturday after a short illness.

"It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness..." the Kofi Annan Foundation in a tweet said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed that all national flags should fly at half-mast across the country and in all of Ghana’s diplomatic missions across the world, from Monday, 20th August 2018, for one week as Ghana mourns the late Kofi Annan.

Mr. Annan was the first black African to take up the role of the world's top diplomat, serving from 1997 to 2006.

He later served as the UN special envoy for Syria, leading efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
