Some 224 girls in Gomoa District Assembly vow to remain virgins

Gomoa Aboso (C/R), Aug. 4, GNA - About 220 schoolgirls between the ages of 14 and 23 years in the Gomoa District have vowed to abstain from sex until they get married.

This was in response to the District Assembly's plan to institute an award for virgins at age 17 and above.

Miss Joyce Aidoo, Gomoa District Chief Executive, said this at Aboso-Benso-Ekroful-Akropong School open-day celebration on Saturday. He said the girls would be sent to hospital for screening before the award is given.

Miss Addo said the Gomoa District reported 557 cases of HIV at Apam Catholic Hospital from 1992 to 2002 and the majority of them were between the ages 15 and 49.

She said 640 million cedis was being spent to build three-unit classroom blocks at Gomoa Akropong, Awomerew Akwafrom and Nsuaem. Under the Ghana Education Trust Fund, 1.8 billion cedis had been allocated to the Gomoa District to build six-unit classroom blocks at Gomoa Oguaakrom, Gomoa Kumasi, Mpota and Dahom.
