Prof. Martey names the church as a promoter of corruption in Ghana

Former moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey has identified the church as one of the promoters and root causes of corruption in Ghana.

Prof. Martey indicated that three main sources were responsible for the unsurmountable fight against corruption.

The constitution, culture and the church according to him were solely responsible for the menace.

Making a contribution at an Institute of Economic Affairs roundtable discussion on the theme: “Can Ghana Win the Fight Against Corruption”, the controversial religious leader posited that the activities of the church has contributed to the growing corruption menace in Ghana.

He said, “There is a paralysis of analysis as regards corruption in this country. We have not really touched the root cause(s) of corruption…”

“Our constitution promotes corruption, Ghanaian culture promotes corruption. Ghana has a gift receiving and giving culture. Gifts are appreciated when given so even if a politician in an election year goes round a takes gifts with him and gives to traditional leaders, it is appreciated…. This is killing our nation,” he stated.



Earlier, former Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Emile Short had made a presentation analyzing whether present efforts at fighting corruption in Ghana will impact positively on the level of corruption.

Justice Emile Short observed that the most effective approach which had been implemented by the government was the appointment of the Special Prosecutor as well as the introduction of the paperless system at the ports.

He however admonished that for the implementation to be successful the Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu needed to surmount the following challenges in order to thrive;

- Mr Amidu needs like-minded competent staff, investigators and lawyers to implement his mandate successfully.

- The office will require adequate resources to function effectively,” he said.

- Will the SP in reality act independently in the selection of the cases that he chooses to investigate and prosecute?

- Will the AG or the President influence the SP. Example, can or will the AG exercise her power of entering a nolle prosequi in a case initiated by the SP and pending in court?
