NDC has not been honest about impact of Bui Dam – TOR boss

Bui's initial cost was pegged at $622m, but a review conduct in 2012 increased the amount by $168m play videoBui's initial cost was pegged at $622m, but a review conduct in 2012 increased the amount by $168m

The NDC Government has not been honest with Ghanaians on the amount of power the country is getting from the Bui dam, chief executive of the Tema Oil Refinery has stated.

According to Kwame Awuah Darko, the dam is not generating the expected amount of power needed to complement the country’s efforts at eliminating ‘dumsor’ and ensuring stable electricity supply.

Speaking to Good Evening Ghana’s Paul Adom Otchere, Mr. Awuah Darko said despite the huge amount of money spent on creating the power generating unit, Bui is barely producing one-third of power expected of it, a situation Mr. Awuah Darko blames on the poor engineering work done during the construction of the dam.

“One million dollars is equal to one megawatt so anytime you make an investment of a million dollars, you should be able to add one megawatt generation capacity to the country. Bui dam has an installed capacity of about 290 to 300 megawatts, but the available capacity is less than a 100 megawatts”.

Kwame Awuah Darko added that the governing NDC is having to suffer for the inefficiencies and incompetence of the erstwhile Kufuor administration as far as investment into the country’s power sector is concerned.
