Ghana Music Awards Chalks 5 Years

Ghana Music Awards
The Ghana Music Awards which comes on at the Conference Centre Accra, on March 13, 2004 will mark the 5th anniversary of the prestigious award programme.


Introduced by CharterHouse Productions in 2000, and dedicated to improve and projecting the image of the Ghanaian music industry, the GMA this year will feature both local and international artistes as part of its anniversary celebrations.


And this year, in view of the accord struck between the GMA and the KORA All Africa Music Awards (KORA Awards), where the winner of the Artiste of the Year award becomes the ultimate prize for the GMA.


This year songs released between the calendar year November 1, 2002 to October 31, 2003 qualify for the awards.


On the other hand all songs with X-rated lyrics, controversial songs with sexual connotations as well as songs with violent lyrics will be disqualified from the nomination list.


As usual the public will vote for the best four songs or artistes in order of preference through newspaper publications.


The public voting will account for 50% of the total score while a technical committee will score the remaining 50%.


KPMG, the international acclaimed accounting firm will once again act as the event statistician and they will process the votes and determine the winners for the various categories.


Prizes for award winners include a plague, certificate and a gold medallion. As part of the anniversary programme there will be a souvenir CD comprising all the GMA winning songs from the inception of the programme.


And as happened last year artistes who wish to use the live band will be obliged.   


Since its inception musicians who have won the song of the Year 2000; Daddy Lumba with Aben Wo Ha, 2001; Kojo Antwi with Tom and Jerry, 2002; Lord Kenya with Medo and 2003; Kontihene with Akatesia.


Patrons to the show have had the privilege of being hosted by the likes of top radio presenter and actor Kwami Sefa Kayi who has compared each of the award ceremonies with CO-hosts - 2000 Akushika Acquaye (GTV) and Kojo Mensah (then with Vibe FM), 2001 Mariam Sugri Bugri (Miss Ghana 1999), Juliet Ansah Asamoah (Host of Heart to Heart) and 2003 Akosua Puni and Kofi Otchere Darko (Radio Gold).


Last year, GMA Song of the Year winner Kontihene and Spacefon Legend Reggie Rockstone put up a spectacular performance at this year?s KORA Africa Award.


Award categories include as usual the Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance, Best Female Vocal Performance, Hiplife Song of the Year, Hiplife Album of the Year, Highlife Artiste of the Year, Highlife Song of the Year.


Others are Contemporary Highlife Album of the Year, Contemporary Highlife Artiste of the Year, Gospel Song of the Year, Gospel Album of the Year, Gospel Artiste of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Best Collaboration of the Year.


The rest are Reggae Song of the Year, Traditional Song of the Year, Music Video Director of the Year, Recording Engineer of the Year, the MUSIGA Music Merit Award and the Record Label of the Year.
