A circuit court in Tamale in Ghana’s Northern Region has sentenced a 25-year-old man to 10 years imprisonment for defiling a two-year-old girl.

Sulemana Danaah, a driver’s mate, was arrested on June 2, after he reportedly committed the crime at Kumbungu in the Northern region.

Chief Inspector Victor Kwafo while prosecuting, told the court that the victim and her friends were playing at Sunniya Primary, a local authority school in the Kumbungu District.

He said the suspect walked to her and managed to lured her into one of the classrooms with Gh¢ 2 and defiled her.

Prosecution indicated that some residents arrested the suspect and brought him to the Kumbungu police station where he was re-arrested.

Medical documents produced in court revealed an attempted force penetration and part of the hymen is bruised. The suspect was later put before the court presided over by H/W William Appiah Twumasi, Thursday where he was convicted on his own plea.

Savanna Signatures, a gender advocacy organization, operating in the Northern region later joined the campaign to seek justice for the victim and had foot medical bills of the victim while receiving treatment.

Victims of domestic violence in Ghana are mostly left to their fate and suffer medical complications when such cases are not reported.

The government had set up a fund to cater for medical bills for such victims but concerns have been raised about its inability to perform its mandate.
