The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has appealed to all Ghanaians living in areas affected by the lockdown to strictly observe the directive and stay at home for the safety of their families and themselves.

The Council said it had noted from media reportage that the first week of the lockdown was not strictly adhered to in some parts of Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Kasoa where the lockdown was declared.

A statement signed by the Reverend Dr Cyril Fayose, General Secretary of the CCG and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday, therefore, reminded all Ghanaians that the decision of the lockdown as declared by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was meant to reduce the spread of COVID-19, “which is a real threat to human existence and should, therefore, be taken seriously”.

The Council also appealed to religious leaders to add their voice to the campaign for citizens to stay at home for the period of the President’s directive and follow the protocols of the Ghana Health Service.

The CCG said it appreciated the efforts of the security agencies who have ensured law and order in the areas affected by the lockdown, urging them to continue to work with professionalism “in these trying times”.

It however, admonished Ghanaians to cooperate with the security personnel deployed to the lockdown areas for the safety of the country.

Meanwhile, the Council has expressed its gratitude to its Member Churches that have donated either in cash or in-kind to institutions including the Ministry of Health, hospitals and the vulnerable in their communities to support and complement the government’s efforts at combating the virus.

“These contributions by churches are in fulfillment of the biblical mandate to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). We implore local congregations to also support the needy in their churches and communities in this difficult period.

“We urge the government to continue to help the poor and marginalized who do not have what it takes to feed themselves for more than three days if they do not go to work”.

The CCG said it acknowledged the challenging times that the nation was passing through, and assured all Ghanaians that “God will see our country through this crisis”.

“We, therefore, beseech all Christians to pray for the healing of Ghana and the entire world as we encourage you with the words of scripture from Psalm 46:10-11: “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” Selah.
