Asogli yam festival to focus on peace among the people

Ho, Aug. 19, GNA - The bedrock of this year's Yam Festival of the Chiefs and people of the Asogli State would be to foster reconciliation and unity among families, clans and the entire community. This was contained in a press release signed by Mr John Kukah, Secretary of the Asogli State and circulated to the media in Ho on Tuesday.

It said reconciliation should provide the needed peace to mobilize both human and material resources towards the development of the area and Ghana.

The press statement said the festival, which portrays the rich cultural heritage of the Asogli state, would also be for stocktaking and thanksgiving.

It said the three-week festival, which would be climaxed with a grand durbar on September 26, this year, would be heralded with a pilgrimage to Notsie in the Republic of Togo on September 5, to strengthen bonds between the chiefs and people of Asogli and Notsie. Other activities include a health walk, Saturday September 12, purification rites at Akoefe, Thursday September 17, hailing of the new yam, Friday September 18, and Miss Asogli pageant, Saturday September 19.

Also on the programme are the sitting in state of Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State to receive homage and greetings from his subjects and well wishers, a state dance and a football match between the youth teams of Asogli and Notsie. The release announced a temporary ban on public burials and funeral rites in the Asogli State from September 7th and 28th, this year.
