The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam has thrown his weight behind the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) over the compilation of the new voter register ahead of the December 7 elections.

Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haruna explained that if the EC, which is in charge of election management in the country, believes the voters’ register must be changed, every Ghanaian must give their support to it for such an exercise.

The compilation of the new voter register has raised several eyebrows as some opposition political parties, led by the largest in the country, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and some civil society organizations have vouched for the existing register, saying it is credible for any elections in Ghana.

Commenting on the issue in an exclusive interview with Onua TV’s correspondent, Nana Akohene Mensah Obibini, Sheikh Mumin Haruna said he supports the EC in its decision.

He explained that if a teacher enters a classroom for the first time, that teacher changes the old register and compiles new names and so the same must apply to the EC.

The Imam said this helps the teacher to know which students are present and those that are not present.

Sheikh Mumin Haruna said the new register will bring credibility and fairness during and after the December 7 elections.
