Police investigating electoral infraction – EC

The Electoral Commission(EC) has said it has referred individuals who committed various electoral offences to the Police for investigations and possible prosecution.

These include cases of multiple registration, forgery of signatures and multiple endorsement of Presidential nominees.

This comes on the heels of the disqualification of about 12  Presidential hopefuls in the Presidential race ahead of the crucial polls slated for December 7, 2016.

Several Presidential candidates have had their nominations rejected following what the EC has cited as anomalies in relation to their nominations.

Former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings is one of the victims who missed out on running for the presidency because one of her guarantors is on the exclusion list of multiple voters.

Many have blamed the EC  saying it failed to do due diligence by informing the political parties of any infraction including fraud detected during the electioneering process, hence the number of errors found in such nomination forms.

According to them, because there has since not been any criminal prosecution against persons who committed the electoral infraction, the candidates cannot be held responsible on that score as well.

However, the Deputy Communications Director of the EC,  Yussif Ayuba said these electoral offences are now in the domain of the police for investigations.

“…The EC has duly forwarded it to the Police for investigations. There are various degrees of offences that have been referred to the police. some are forgery, impersonation, and others,” he disclosed in a recent interview with Accra-based Citi FM.
