Our joy will know no bounds if Akufo-Addo 'pardons' Abuga Pele - Agbenyo

Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Fred Agbenyo is pleading with President Nana Akufo-Addo to grant Presidential pardon to Mr. Abuga Pele.

An Accra High Court presided over by Justice Afia Asare-Botwe sentenced Abuga Pele, a former National Coordinator of the defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) to 6 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of causing financial loss to the state.

He was sentenced together with a representative of the Goodwill International Group (GIG), Philip Akpeena Assibit who was also implicated in the GYEEDA scandal.

Mr. Assibit will be serving a 12-year jail term.

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Fred Agbenyo told host Kwami Sefa Kayi that his party respects the court verdict.

In contrast with views of NDC Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Nii Lante Vanderpuye that the NDC when it assumes power in the year 2020 will ensure the release of Abuga Pele, Fred Agbenyo stated emphatically that the NDC has due regard for the rule of law, hence will not do anything contrary to the country's constitution.

He however intimated that the constitution makes provision for a President of the Republic to exercise prerogative of mercy and therefore grant pardon to prisoners.

He hoped "if in the wisdom of the current President, when he looks at the circumstances" and conduct of Mr. Abuga Pele and says "‘Okay, I’m granting pardon’; I think we will all be happy and our joy would be complete”.

“Almost every President in the fourth Republic has had the cause to even grant pardon to prisoners before. Under Jerry John Rawlings, he granted some pardons. Under President Kufour, the same thing, Professor Mills, President Mahama...” he added.
