It’s not our fault that you don’t understand Akufo-Addo’s eloquent accent – NPP jabs NDC

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has mocked its biggest opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for not understanding what it means to have an acquired accent in modern-day politics.

General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu at a press conference in Accra Wednesday stated that President Akufo-Addo is a refined man who speaks well hence it is no fault of theirs if the NDC does not understand.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government have been hit by a series of corruption allegations which have evoked pressure from the civil society, anti-corruption campaigners, opposition parties and the public.

The allegations include procurement malpractices at the National Youth Authority (NYA) which has resulted in the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer, Emmanuel Sin-Nyet Asigri; buying and selling of government contracts by the Chief Executive Officer of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Mr. Adjei Boateng Adjei, who has since resigned; botched takeover of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) by the Power Distribution Service (PDS); Cash-for-Seat allegation among others.

President Akufo-Addo, while addressing the 2019 Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Takoradi on Monday, September 9 said the NDC has been trying to tag his government and his person with corruption despite clear indications of his efforts to deal with the canker.

According to Akufo-Addo, the “orchestrated attempts by my opponents to hang the tag of corruption on the necks of my government and myself, despite all the manifest efforts being made to deal with the phenomenon of corruption, will not work. I did not come into public life to enrich myself”.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a press conference on Tuesday voiced their disappointment at the manner in which President Akufo-Addo is handling scandalous cases while accusing the president of covering up for his ‘boys’.



Defending Akufo-Addo, John Boadu stated, “The President has spoken clearly and eloquently and I dare to say that speaking eloquently is a problem for the NDC”.

According to him, eras have changed and it was impossible to have carried “our grandfather’s accent in this modern-day politics and it’s important that that is acknowledged that it is important for the NDC.”

“I don’t expect anything better than that. That our president speaks eloquently and that too is a problem for them.” He teased.
