Atta Mills advised me to fear God – Joyce Banda

Joyce Banda Joyce Banda

Former Malawian leader Joyce Banda has stated that the late President Atta Mills advised her to fear God and seek knowledge from above, while she served as President of her country.

According to Banda who was president between 2012 and 2014, her short encounter with the late academician and tax expert at the Synagogue church in Nigeria left a lasting impression on her.

Professor Mills who died on July 24, 2012 is the first Ghanaian leader to have died in office. He is largely remembered for his calm demeanor, incorruptibility and desire for peace

Speaking at a lecture in Cape Coast in commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the departure of the law professor, Mrs. Banda described the late Mills as “ a true leader who feared God and led his people by the ways of God”.

“I watched the testimony that he gave at the Synagogue Church of all Nations during his first term and I saw a man standing before God with true humility. What I learnt from this great son of Africa was his love for faithfulness to God and ability to forgive. I therefore knew that it’s only when you are anointed by God that you can be a true leader”.

She continued: “I was introduced to him and another African leader by the leader of synagogue, it was a very brief meeting. It was at that meeting that he told me that “the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom”, that short encounter has always been with me”.
