Chereponi conflict: NADMO’s claim of insecurity false – Police

The Northern Regional Police Command has rubbished claims by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) that they are unable to reach out to those affected by the ethnic conflict between the Konkombas and the Chokosis in the Chereponi District of the North East region because of insecurity.

Reports say more than 400 people have been displaced due to the conflict and several houses have been burnt to ashes.Two people have been confirmed dead from the renewed clashes.

There is no food to eat and no water to drink for those who, in the last 48 hours, have fled fighting and their sources of livelihood.

According to the Director for the Northern Regional NADMO Alhaji Abdallah Hindu, they are unable to go to the community due to the nature of the violence.

“For now it is very difficult for us to go there because the fight is still ongoing, we will not be able to tell what caused the issue because we have not had access to the place”

“We have items here in our vehicles but we can’t go there because the situation is not yet calm, according to the Military the fighting is not just at one place but more than 7 places, he told Joy News.

But the PRO of the Northern Regional Police Command DSP Yusif Tanko in an interview stated that the claim by NADMO is untenable.

“NADMO is reported to have said that because insecurity they are not able to go to the interior, that is not true. Ask NADMO if they have come to security for an escort to wherever they want to go and we didn’t escort them. We are available, we have police and military men on the ground so if you want to go to places to take care of the people there and you have reservations security-wise what you have to do is to contact the security for an escort.”
