It was all joy and bliss when Missionaries and some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints went out in their numbers for the Light The World launch on Saturday December 1, 2018 in Accra.

The event which took place at the Accra Rehabilitation Center, a Government institution which provides skill training for Persons With Disabilities, brought together hawkers, head porters and individuals from the various Disability Unions.

Participants were uplifted with choral performances by the Bountiful Tabernacle and Joyful Souls Choral groups. Missionaries from the Ghana Accra West and Ghana Accra Missions also performed a play exhibiting the importance of service and the Light The World campaign as a whole.

The theme, “Give as He Gave,” invites people to follow the example of the Savior Jesus Christ, “the light of the world”.

Speaking at the event, His Majesty Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, Guest of Honor for the occasion called on all and sundry to participate in the campaign by rendering an act of service to people.

President Rex Allen, President of the Accra Ghana Missionary Training Center in his address, explained that the Light The World campaign seeks to encourage people to give and support others since that is the rationale behind the celebration of Christmas.

Mr. Darlington Churchill, Managing Director for the Accra Rehabilitation Center commended the Church for its support towards the refurbishment of the Visual Arts department.

“This event has come with improvement in our infrastructure as the various workshops will be renovated and equipped. One workshop has been done and we salute the Church for this gesture”.

He further called on leaders of the Africa West Area of the Church to adopt the Center to help provide regular support to the trainees.

The Accra Rehabilitation Center was established in 1962. The Center has over the years trained over two thousand Persons With Disability with employable skills.

As part of activities at the launch, food was distributed to over four hundred individuals who participated in the event.

Campaign Structure

In the four weeks leading to Christmas, people are encouraged to participate in the campaign. In week one, participants are encouraged to serve those in need around the world.

During the second week, “Light Your Community” focuses on serving in communities. Families are the focus of the third week in “Light Your Family.”

Participants are invited to show their appreciation to loved ones by calling their parents, having a family prayer, spending one-on-one time with children or other activities.

In week four, “Light Your Faith,” participants are invited to increase their faith in Jesus Christ through prayer, scripture study, visiting a temple or other religious site or attending a special Christmas worship service.

On Sunday, December 23, the public is being invited to a Christ-centered one-hour sacrament meeting in their community.
