Stop helping citizens to break laws – MP jabs colleagues

Deputy Attorney General and Member of Parliament for Tempane Constituency, Joseph Dindiok Kpemka has revealed that interference of some members of parliament and other state actors are partly to blame for the failure of law enforcement agencies to properly do their job.

According to him, citizens always break laws because they have contact of some politicians who usually call for their release.

This, he said, impedes the rule of law in the country.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, the MP said “…the very petty things we consider insignificant are the causes of lack of law enforcement. For example, you find people ride motorcycle recklessly or without license and when some of those people are arrested, calls come to us and we call the police to let them go. This happens and we must not pretend. When people are emboldened to act in such a manner knowing very well that will release him from trouble, he will continue to perpetuate such act...”.

He added that the “system” is also a reason we still have challenges in ensuring that the rule of law is abided.

“It is a fact that in this country all the laws necessary for us to have a very organized society have been enacted in this house. What then is the reason why most of these things we cry everyday about? It is fundamentally because of the system but we make those laws but in the course of implementation the practical realities stare us in the face, and we become toners. And when trouble looms as a result of our own conduct we bemoan it. Law enforcement is at the core of every democratic dispensation” he added

He urged all persons in authority to ensure that they assist to get rid of systems and everything that contribute negatively to the progress and implementation of our laws.
