The judge failed to take into account a whole lot of mitigating factors.
The man confessed. That alone calls for a lenient sentence.
Was he a repeat offender? Nothing in the news to suggest that. So, if a first time offender, an appropriate fine, including compensation to the plaintiff, and being bounded to be of good behaviour is what we expect in a civilised society; not a 10-yr sentence.

Cassava valued GHc 500 is not a small thing and the Judge did just the right thing cos it is very annoying that somebody who has used his energy to plant his cassava would see his harvest going to wrong hands. He deserves it !

Politicians steal millions of dollars to buy mansions on Europe, US and now the UAE, send their wards to the best schools outside Ghana, take their girl friends on official visists paid by the poor and helpless taxpayer, but know they don't even get a second on prison. SADA, GYEEDA, WAYOMI,MERCHANT BANK, NYEP, just to mention a few, how many years will those responsible for this broad day robbery get?
Ghana is going to feed this man, clothe him, give him free health care and security for ten fucking years at the expense of the tax payer.
And we call this justice system? I hate to say this but Ghana is a failed nation. almost everybody is suffering from insomnia ( except politicians and corrupt public officials), the aged are weepong, no hope for the nation. I want to ask, why can't we give this kind of offender punishment in a form of community service? We pay for our road sides to be cleared and swept, we pay for waste collection, people to sweep our public place of convenience, cleaning choked gutters. Why can't be a form of community service that trivial cases offenders can be made to undertake? First of all, this will save the nation huge sums of money (no need to feed, provide housing, healthcare, clothing to convicts).

The 37 years old man (Andoh) who forged the Energy Minister signature which granted a permission to a foreign company to operate at the oil rig, was arrested and granted police enquiry bail meanwhile investigation is on process. What are you doing about these stupid magistrates and ignorant staff of yours who are disgracing the legal profession. It is a big disgrace to Ghana and to legal practice in Ghana when at this age our legal system is so archaic. Somebody steals cassava and is sent to prison for ten years. Why? I am not suggesting that the culprit should not be punished. The point is that the sentence or punishment melted to the convict is irrational and lacks professional touch. Sentencing has meaning in law, has reason and has measurement. Many of this kind of sentence are in Ghana Law Reports books and they form a kind of precedents which are consulted and used over and over again by lazy and ignorant magistrates. The Chief Justice must work to reform the system before more harm are done.Civilization gives way to archaic and imperial way of doing things thereby paving way to move society forward.Justice is done to correct wrongs but not to create more wrongs.
