Lecturer convicted for reckless driving

The Winneba District Magistrate Court has convicted 53-year-old lecturer of the University of Cape Cost (UCC) to a fine of GHc240.00 for reckless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm.

Francis Dela pleaded not guilty to the charges and was convicted according on his own plea.

Prosecution Police Detective Sergeant Peter Agbelie told the court that, the complainant of the case is a Minister of the Gospel.

He said on 11th August 2013 at about 19:15 hours, the accused person, Dela, was driving a Mitsubishi Gallant Private Car with registration Number GN 971-13 from Accra heading towards Saltpond.

According to the prosecution, the accused person on reaching a spot about 300 meters to Gomoa Okyereko, veered off his lane to the opposite direction and crushed with a Mitsubishi L2000 Pick-up with registration Number GW 1349-11, being driven by Pastor Prince Twumasi who was also travelling from Winneba towards Accra.

Detective Sgt. Agbelie said people on board the Pick-up vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital where they were admitted, treated and discharged.

He said both Twumasi and Dela were taken to the scene of the accident where measurements were taken in their presence as part of the investigations.

The prosecution said after investigations, the accused person was arraigned before the court and charged with the offense.
