Mason remanded for defiling 12-year-old girl

A 26-year-old mason Yaw Asmah, a resident of Tafo, a suburb of Assin-Fosu, was on Tuesday remanded into police custody by a Cape Coast Circuit Court for allegedly defiling a 12-year old girl.

He pleaded not guilty and is to re-appear before the court on Tuesday, April 30.

Narrating the facts of the case to the court presided over by Mrs. Florence Kai Otu, Police Inspector Christiana Sampong said, on February 14 this year, at about 1900 hours, Asmah visited his sister who lives in the same compound with the victim and her grandmother who is the complainant.

She said Asmah was in his sister’s room in the company of his nephew, one Emmanuel Owusu, when the victim joined them.

Inspector Sampong said, not long after, the lights went off and Asmah deliberately sent his nephew to buy candles for him but when Emmanuel returned later with a lighted candle to the room, he found Asmah half naked, sexually abusing the victim.

She said, Emmanuel on seeing that quickly informed the complainant who made a report to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) leading to the arrest of Asmah.

Prosecutor said, Asmah denied the offence in his caution statement but a medical report on the victim proved positive of sexual assault.
