Police mount search for owner of AK 47 rifles

The police have mounted a search for a businessman alleged to be the owner of the arms and ammunition that were seized in Kumasi Tuesday.

The suspect, Inusah Kusasi, a resident of Asawase, a Zongo community in Kumasi, is said to be on the run.

A security source told Thursday that every effort was being made to locate the man to assist in investigations.

Customs officials, acting on a tip off, impounded nine AK 47 rifles, a loaded foreign-made pistol and 281 rounds of ammunition at a checkpoint at Anwia-Nkwanta on the Kumasi-Obuasi road at dawn on Tuesday.

The arms were found concealed in a sack on a Mercedes Benz cargo truck fully loaded with cola nuts from Cote d’Ivoire.

Four persons, including the driver of the vehicle and his mate and two persons who claimed to be the owners of the cola nuts, were arrested.

They are in police custody for interrogation.

It was on their arrest that the name of Inusah came up as the owner of the weapons.

The runaway suspect is said to be an influential person in the Asawase community.**
