Teacher jailed for attempting to steal taxi

The Winneba District Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Kennedy Asare, a 38-year-old teacher, to 18 months imprisonment in hard labour, for attempting to steal a taxi.

Asare, who was a teacher at Awutu Bawjiase in the Central Region, pleaded guilty.

Detective Police Sergeant Peter Agbelie told the court presided over by Mr Charles Owusu Nssiah that, in November last year, Asare saw Bismark Kwesi Gyan at Winneba Junction driving a taxi with ‘for sale’ embossed on the vehicle.

The court heard that Asare asked Gyan to make the necessary arrangements with the taxi owner so that he (Asare) could buy it.

Sgt Agbelie said Asare and Gyan agreed to meet the taxi owner for the transactions.

The prosecution said Gyan allowed Asare to test the vehicle before going to the car owner.

Sgt Agbelie said Asare asked Gyan to alight from the taxi and position stones for him (Asare) to test the vehicle.

The prosecution said when the driver alighted from the taxi, Asare attempted to abscond with the vehicle, and in the process was involved in an accident at Winneba Junction.
