'Incompetent' IGP must go – Abronye DC

David Asante-Appeatu, Inspector-General of Police David Asante-Appeatu, Inspector-General of Police

Brong Ahafo Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe popularly known as Abronye DC, has joined those clamouring for the dismissal or resignation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Apeatu in the wake of the surge in armed robberies in the country.

According to him, the IGP is incompetent and should be fired because he is after all on contract.

Speaking on Ekosii Sen on Accra-based Asempa FM on the rise in crime, Abronye DC said on Thursday, 1 March that: “The IGP is ineffective, he should be replaced as soon as possible. Press conferences will not solve this problem of insecurity. He’s been given a two-year contract but he’s not performing, so why not take the contract away from him?”

According to him, effective and competent police officers like COP Kofi Boakye have been sidelined because they were against the policy of awarding contracts to retired police officers to serve as IGP.

Abronye DC, therefore, wants government to consult Mr Kofi Boakye and other “competent officers” on how to fight the robberies.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament is also demanding the immediate replacement of the IGP.

According to Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, Mr Asante-Apeatu lacks innovative ideas to tackle crime. He told Parliamentary correspondent, Ekow Annan that the IGP has no business in office in the face of heightened crime.

“There is something wrong with the top hierarchy of the police and who is at the top? It is the IGP. So, clearly if he is due for retirement and you give him contract and he is not performing the president must let the IGP go,” he stated.
