Yam Market clashes stall business

Commercial activities at the yam market at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, have come to a halt following the bloody clashes that occurred between the Konkombas and Dagombas settlers in the area.

There clashes led to two deaths and several injuries on Tuesday, 11 April.

Reporting from the scene on Wednesday, 12 April, Accra News’ Nana Amoako Gyampah said: “Although there is heavy police presence here this morning, most of the people fear for their lives. Business activities at the yam market at Agbolgbloshie have stalled.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Defence, Major (rtd) Derek Oduro, has told Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM that efforts were being made to retrieve illicit arms from civilians.

“These illegal arms in possession of the people result in some of these fatal clashes and we are making efforts to retrieve all these weapons from them,” he said.

The lawmaker further noted that an unresolved, deep-seated issue among the Dagombas and the Kokombas led to the clash, hence a lasting solution would be found to deal with the menace.
