Tobinco Sets Up Multi-billion Dollar Plant

Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited TPL is setting up a multi-billion dollar manufacturing plant to start producing its own drugs.

The company has set up in February 1998 to market pharmaceutical products, currently distributes 150 product lines across the length and breadth of the country. It distributes prescription and non-prescription drugs to health facilities, wholesale and retail units with product range that includes analgesics such as LOFNAC and BLOPEN, anti malaria drugs such as LONART, P-ALAXIN and LUFART, antibiotics – CLAVUMOCID, AMO-VULIN as well as cough and cold relievers like STROBBIN HERBAL and FABRIN.

Others are haematinics – AMITONE, ALVITE, FOLIGROW and Nutritional Supplements that include GUDAPET and VITAL-X.

Tobinco also has a wide range of distribution channels ranging from wholesale outlets to retail shops where drugs are sold to consumers. The retail outlets serve as community pharmacies to their surrounding communities.

With a staff strength of about eight with only four (4) main drugs lines, the company has grown in leaps and bounds with a current staff strength of 380.

How it started

The company was registered on February 28, 1998 as Tobinco Company Limited. It changed its name in January 2003 to Tobinco Pharmacy Limited and later in April 2006 it again changed to Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited.

The company has an ambitious and dynamic mission to create a one-stop pharmaceutical company through effective production, promotion, distribution and research into pharmaceutical products in the Sub-Saharan region. Additionally, TPL’s vision will allow its patrons to enjoy even more affordable pharmaceutical products.

The company pegs its core competence on seven pillars; the grace of God; goodwill on the market; ready product acceptability and ripple effect of hospitality which comes with its good relationship with customers, colleagues and partners.

Other values are affordable pricing, which gives persons with all types of income level access to their products; good market share, especially for anti-malarial drugs and enthusiastic young staff.

TPL operates on sectoral basis in Ghana. Currently, the company operates from four sectors in the regional capitals aside from its head office in Accra.

The board of directors

TPL is led by a board of seasoned people. This includes Mr Samuel Amo Tobbin, the Executive Chairman; Mrs Mercy Araba Sika Tobbin, a seasoned business executive as well as Mr Justice Essuman an experienced administrator.

The management team also comprises the Executive Chairman/CEO, the managing director, financial controller and four departmental heads who are well experienced, hardworking and committed personnel.

The team also includes highly experienced and technical professionals in credits and marketing as well as other key areas in pharmacy to safeguard and grow the company into shape.

Mr Tobbin himself has over 20 years of experience in managing businesses. He has previously solely grown Tobinco Company Limited in general merchandises.

As a business strategist and an entrepreneur, Samuel Amo Tobbin, has been the engine which is growing this company from strength to strength.

He has undergone an extensive training in finance, management and strategic planning with hands on experience to run his business efficiently.

He was recently nominated for an Honorary Doctorate Degree from a University in Denmark for his experience in Business Management and Strategy.

It was also awarded the Marketing Oriented Company of the year 2011 by the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG).

A citation accompanying the awards read; “since your establishment, you have endeared yourself to Ghanaians by becoming a household name in the provision of high quality pharmaceuticals and other healthcare products in Ghana and beyond.”

The citation also recognised Tobinco’s efforts at consistently delivering the safest and most potent health care products using competent human capital and incredible passion for innovation are well noted.

Tobinco was in 2008 honoured by the Ghana Private and Dental Association for the most trusted brand – ALAXIN product of TPL. Currently, TPL is the leading importer and distributor of anti-malaria drugs in Ghana.

The company sponsors some members in the healthcare provision team such as pharmacists, doctors and health related associations such as the Ghana Medical Association, the Lady PharmacistsAssociation of Ghana, the Christian Medical Fellowship – Korle-Bu, the Foundation of Hope Ministry, Pamela Bridgewaters Project, the Holy Trinity Medical Centre and many others.

TPL also has an array of students across Ghana it is currently sponsoring through school and gives opportunities for tertiary students to have attachments with the company throughout the year.
