Government to invest in storage facilities to preserve starchy food - Eric Opoku

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has outlined a number of immediate government interventions intended to make the sector more attractive, including the establishment of storage facilities.

Speaking specifically to what kinds of storage facilities his ministry is considering, the minister said these will be used to store starchy food items and keep them from going bad.

In an interview with Piesie Okrah on Dwaboase on TV XYZ, on Thursday, September 11, 2025, and monitored by GhanaWeb, Eric Opoku indicated that this will be done across the country.

“The government is establishing storage facilities across the country. These facilities will serve as hubs for the preservation of starchy foods,” he said.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture also indicated that this intervention will be essential to the government’s broader Feed Ghana project, with a rewarding system attached to it for organisations and bodies that contribute to the growth of the food sector of the country.

“Under the Feed Ghana project, the government is introducing an award scheme to recognise institutions such as churches, schools, and security agencies that excel in agriculture,” he added.

The Feed Ghana Programme is a government flagship initiative to transform Ghana's agricultural sector, increase local production of key crops and livestock, and reduce the country's heavy reliance on food imports.

Launched in 2025, it aims to boost food security, create jobs, empower farmers through Farmer Service Centres, promote smart farming and agribusiness, and foster agro-industrial development by supplying raw materials to factories.
