Ghana’s Aviation Minister and Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Joseph Kofi Adda, has been hailed by the Paramount Chief of the Kologo Traditional Area, Naba Clifford Abagna Asobayire V, for his enormous contributions to the fight against deforestation in Kasena-Nankana.

The Kologo Overlord has also applauded the MP for supporting tree planting projects which would see the regrowth and improvement of the tree cover in the Kasena-Nankana area.

Already dying Forests in the Kasena-Nankana area have suffered the activities of illegal chain-saw operators who continue to rob the area of its dense population of indigenous trees such as the Rosewood.

Efforts by government and traditional authorities have intensified to rid the area of fellers. Severe punishments have been sanctioned on offenders to discourage people from engaging in the illegal activity.

The Parliamentarian, who has on several platforms declared his commitment to fight the illegal activity and give his support to rejuvenate and ameliorate the area tree cover which is fast depleting, made numerous donations of cash and improved seedlings to Paramountcies in his constituency to augment their efforts in greening the area.

He supported the Paramountcies with cash and nearly 10,000 improved seedlings.

Naba Clifford Abagna Asobayire V, whose paramountcy received over 3,000 of the improved seedlings from the legislator to support afforest Kologo and its suburbs revealed in an interview with the press that the kind gesture by Mr. Adda has given the Kologo Traditional area a big push in their drive to redevelop the tree cover of the area.

The chief noted the crucial role trees play in our environment, adding that the aim is to counter the effects of deforestation and climate change in the area.

He said: “I have rolled out a tree-planting project to grow more trees to make up for the lost ones. So far, the project has seen the planting of over 2,000 seedlings last year and over 4,000 this year”.

In fact, the MP for Navrongo has been very supportive in this. He has supported us with a lot of improved tree seedlings. The seedlings he gave us are good improved trees and will very much help Kologo regain the lost trees. We have already planted the seedlings and they are doing very well. So, I can’t end without thanking him for his endless support to the project.”

He bemoaned the activities of chain-saw operators and warned that the traditional authority would unleash its wrath on people who want to ride on the destruction of the Kologo forest reserves to enrich themselves.

Naba Clifford Abagna Asobayire V, appealed to the security agencies and the Forest Commission to intensify their watch duties over the small tree reserves left in the area and work closely with the traditional authority to ensure they are protected from destructive activities.

“Illegal felling of rosewood still remains a challenge to us in Kologo. The chain-saw operators have intensified their activities and that is a worry to me. But as the paramount chief, I am doing my best. I will urge the forest commission to work closely with us to completely rid the area of their activities,” He stated.

In a related story, Naba Clifford Abagna Asobayire V, has appealed to government to help address the developmental challenges in education, health, infrastructure and roads in his area.

According to him, the challenges have made life difficult for the area’s fast-growing population and slowed Kologo’s growth process as the area has become unattractive to workers and foreigners who want to invest.

He particularly pleaded with government to give attention to the 22 km Navrongo-Kologo-Naaga road, which has become a source of respiratory problems and severe back pains and fix it to alleviate the suffering his people and other motorists endure traveling on it.
