African central banks must boost collaboration, promote gender equality - Bank of England

The Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy at the Bank of England, Clare Lombardelli, has emphasised the importance of collaboration among African central banks in navigating a rapidly changing global financial landscape.

Delivering the opening remarks on November 10, 2025 at the inaugural Pan-African Central Bank Governors’ Conference, co-hosted by the Bank of Ghana and the Bank of England, Lombardelli highlighted Ghana’s 60-year journey of its national currency, the Cedi, describing it as a symbol of economic sovereignty and resilience.

She also called for strengthened gender equality in central bank leadership, citing Afua Kyei, Chief Financial Officer at the Bank of England, who was recently recognised as the most influential Black person in the UK on the 2026 Powerlist.

“Institutions that reflect the diversity of the societies they serve are more effective, innovative, and resilient,” Lombardelli said, urging mentorship, sponsorship, and leadership development for women to accelerate gender parity in senior roles.

Lombardelli noted that the conference is designed as an interactive platform for candid, peer-to-peer discussions on central bank independence, accountability, decision-making, and resilience amid economic volatility and political pressures.

The conference is being held in Accra under the theme “Central Bank Governance: Leadership, Credibility, and Resilience in African Central Banking.”

The two-day gathering brings together Governors, Deputy Governors, and senior officials from 23 African central banks, alongside representatives from international organisations and partner institutions.
