A Guinean court has jailed a critic of president Alpha Conde for organizing protests against the Head of State.

The court found Oumar Sylla, popularly referred to as Foniké Mengué, guilty of illegal assembly and spreading false information.

He was subsequently jailed three years.

"Tell Alpha Condé that even if I spend 10 years in prison, I will always defend my convictions.

"I will always oppose, in freedom or in prison, his illegal and illegitimate third mandate, and I will fight for his departure," the jailed activist is quoted to have said.

The 83-year-old president secured a controversial third term in office last year but the process was punctuated with deadly protests and clashes.

Conde pushed through a referendum that lifted the consitutional two term limits before the country went to polls largely boycotted by the opposition.

Clashes ensued between opposition activits and security agencies resulting in the deaths of a number of people.
