Nigeria: What does Wizkid's 'Made in Lagos' tour mean for the industry?

Nigerian Musician, Wizkid Nigerian Musician, Wizkid

Already, Wizkid’s album, “Made in Lagos” has been crowned the best album released in 2020. That means it’s rated above classics like “Twice As Tall,” “Carpe Diem” and “A Better Time.” In just a little over eight months, Wizkid hasn’t only broken records, he’s also set records.

“Essence,” which is currently the biggest song from the “Made in Lagos” LP, has been called the song of the summer by Spotify and many other international and global outlets.

The word on the road is that “Essence” could debut on the Billboard Hot 100. If or when this happens, “Essence” will have done what no other song has ever done and will be regarded as Nigerian pop classic, and will be mentioned with the likes of “African Queen” and “Oliver Twist.” That’s massive!

While the Tems-assisted “Essence” is still making waves both home and abroad, Wizkid decided to announce tour dates to promote the album. Imagine promoting an album that’s still very hot with a world tour? One word: sensational.

The tour, which includes shows all over the US and the rest of North America, stretches from September 2021 through February 2022, with no appearances in November and December. December is most likely for Lagos and Ghana.

With this tour, there’s no limit to what heights “Made in Lagos” can get to. The album already has 34 weeks on the Billboard World albums chart. One week more and it’ll equal Burna Boy’s record with “African Giant,” set in 2019.

What do all these mean?

It means if you’re a Wizkid hater, it’s about to get bloody because Wizkid is coming to dominate. Don’t be surprised when Made in Lagos does the impossible and becomes the best album two years in a row.

After this US & North American tour, the UK and Europe will follow, and knowing Starboy, he’ll definitely bring it back home and do a couple of shows all over the country.

I don’t wanna overreach, but it’s safe to say after all these we can say Wizkid has done it all. Is Wizkid the greatest to ever do it or what?
