Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta was the sole East African leader in Tanzania for the state funeral of former president John Magufuli.

Uhuru delivered a tribute which has widely been applauded by the media in Tanzania and back home in Kenya.

At a point during the tribute delivered in Kiswahili, the Kenyan leader had reason to pause for over two minutes, before continuing.

The pause was due to the Islamic call to prayer that was heard from a nearby mosque as he was speaking. Many people on social media hailed the gesture by Kenyatta as a sign of respect for religion.

The funeral was held at the Jamhuri Stadium in the capital Dodoma. In attendance were about 10 African leaders who paid glowing tribute to the memory of the Tanzanian leader.

Samia Suluhu Hassan, the new Tanzanian president was joined by Magufuli's wife Janet and other high ranking government officials as well as thousands of people from across the country.

Magufuli's death was announced on March 17. Yesterday's funeral was the second of three funerals before his burial on March 26 in his hometown of Chato.
