Coronavirus: South Africa bans takeaway alcohol over Easter holidays

South Africa has banned sale of takeaway alcohol over the Easter holidays in a move to curb possible spike in coronavirus infections.

The country is Africa's most impacted in terms of caseload and death rate with respect to COVID-19.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the move in a Tuesday evening address to update the citizenry on virus combat, he said alcohol had a role in encouraging negligent behaviour.

Despite the takeaway sale ban, bars and restaurants may still serve drinks and religious gatherings have also been restricted to 50% capacity if indoors.

This is the latest alcohol restriction since the pandemic hit the country.
