Abukari Damba advocates standard minimum wage for players

Former Black Stars goalkeeper Abukari Damba has said that there should be a minimum wage structure for players in the various leagues in Ghana.

Abukari Damba said clubs need to meet some criteria before they can be licensed and player’s minimum salary is one of such criteria.

In an interview with Franklin Oteng Appau Papin on Onua TV, the former Black Stars goalkeepers’ trainer said the club licensing system insists on minimum wage for players and if clubs do not follow the right structure, bodies like the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA can take them on

"I Damba can’t determine the minimum salary of players. That is why there is a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). We need to responsible by contracting professionals to do the job.”

He explained that paying local players well would motivate them to put up their best performance.

It will also help to keep them for long in the local league before they travel abroad and it would make the league more attractive and lucrative, he suggested.

But if they are given little, clubs from other countries would offer them $200 and they will leave, he concluded.
