Ghanaian football legend Opoku Afriyie passes away

Nana Opoku my heart is broken.???????????? You were an amazing human being. Some people couldn’t take your no nonsense approach and the fact that you pulled no punches. Some found you too curt for their liking, but to those of us who really knew you, you were a genuine man, a generous man, a kind man, an honest man, you had a sense of humour (INSIDE JOKE: “Kofi, Kofi Poku, drink water, you’re scaring the children”), man of his word. One of the many, many things I loved about you was the fact that you were uncompromisingly forthright. You NEVER treated me discourteously, you NEVER disappointed me.
You were always very respectful, thoughtful, giving, kind, caring, tender and loving towards me. It’s a huge understatement to say that I’m going to sorely miss the person you were, your phone calls just to hear my voice, just to check on me to see if I’m ok, to tease me about getting me my first Ghanaian passport, all those years ago and to ask, when I’m going to visit Ghana again and to see if I wanted anything from Ghana. You on the hand NEVER asked me for anything in return.
I regret never telling you just how much your phone calls, your love, care, attention and kindness meant to me. My heart flipped when our mutual friend rang to inform me of your passing. Only yesterday I had you on my list of people to call to say ‘I love you’, to let you know how much you mean to me and to tell you how grateful I am for EVERYTHING you did and continued to do for me; I shall forever regret not making that call.
As we say in England, they broke the mould when they made you. You, my beloved gentleman was one of a kind. I’m very blessed and honoured to have had you in my life. It was a privilege to have been one of your “favourite people” in the world. I will love you forever and I will NEVER forget you. My darling man, God gave you an amazing talent for playing football, so keep dribbling balls pass your opponents in Heaven. Ghana has lost a LEGEND, but heaven has gained an incredibly talented and wonderful gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. Gone but NEVER forgotten.
Dearest, may you Rest Peacefully in your Creator’s bossom. Sleep tight my darling Kofi.??????????????????????????????????????????
