Asamoah Gyan's boxing debut postponed

Due to injury suffered by national Super Bantamweight champion Raymond Commey who was billed to defend his title against Emmanuel Quartey in the main bout, soccer star Asamoah Gyan’s purported maiden boxing promotion originally scheduled for this Friday July 6 has been postponed to 1stSeptember.

Gyan who only received his manager and promoter’s license from the Ghana Boxing Authority barely a week ago, had planned to stage the quickest promotion by a licensee but Commey’s injury has resulted in a change of plans.

But the footballer who is expected to seal his stay with United Arab Emirates side Al Ain within the coming week, is not overly concerned and has given his backing to the new date.

“I’m not worried the fight can’t come on as planned because I know that in boxing anything can happen anytime. I understand the game that’s why I’m investing in it,” Gyan has said.

Meanwhile, there will be a press conference at the Media Centre of the Accra Sports Stadium this Thursday July 5 to officially launch Gyan’s BabyJet Promotions and Management as well as contract signing for a planned mega fight between local hotshots George Ashie who holds the Commonwealth Lightweight title against former IBF Intercontinental champ Emmanuel Tagoe famously called Game Boy.

Asamoah Gyan will also use the opportunity to explain to the Ghanaian press his reasons for adding boxing to his sports repertoire on the programme billed to be aired live on Ghana’s leading sports television station Metro TV beginning 2pm.
