One of the victims who initially survived the fire explosion at the GOIL filling station at the Nkrumah Circle last week has died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where he was receiving treatment.

Emmanuel Abbey, 26, died around 9pm, Thursday, June 11, 2015, after frantic efforts by medical staff to save his life. He was one of the six victims sent to the Hospital in critical condition after the incident.

His death brings to 152, the total official number of people who lost their lives in the blast.

Doctors say the deceased, who was among the hundreds that sought shelter from the downpour on June 3 at the filling station, inhaled too much heat and gas when the explosion occurred.

As a result, he could not breathe necessitating the creation of a tube around his neck through surgical operation by the doctors at the National Reconstruction and Burns Centre.

The victim however, could not survive partly due to the unavailability of oxygen at the Unit to aid his breathing, according to Resident Doctor of the Centre Dr. Kwesi Nsafu, who disclosed this to Atinka News on Friday, June 12, 2015.

He said Emmanuel could have survived if the Centre had an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to cater for his condition.

Dr. Nsaful called for support from individuals and organisations to help complete works on the Centre’s ICU which is under construction. The Unit is currently without oxygen facilities and has no elevators.

The Centre lacks qualified and specially trained nurses with the requisite skills to manage condition of patients.

Meanwhile, one of the survivors who was sent to the facility in a critical condition has been discharged while the four others and another woman who was transferred from the Ga South Municipal Hospital, are said to be positively responding to treatment.
