Appiah explains choice of Opare over Afful

Ghana coach, Kwasi Appiah, told a post-match press conference in natal Monday night that he chose full back Dan Opare over Harrison Afful for the lost match against the USA because Opare showed form during their training sessions.

Quite against the observation that Afful was superb on the right of defence in the friendly against South Korea and appeared a better choice for Monday night's match, the coach disagreed.

According to him, he rested Opare in that friendly because he picked a slight injury and needed to give him time to recover.

"But ever since the Korea game, Opare returned strongly and had been outstanding in our training sessions", Coach Appiah intimated.

The right of defence in Ghana's set up against the USA was one of the weak links and the area the American captain, Dempsey exploited early in the first minute to crack in the opener that set the victory tone and a sweet revenge for the Yankees.
