Akonnor ahead of Abubakar in race for vacant Kotoko coaching job

Charles Kwablan Akonnor is in line to be named the next substantive coach of Asante Kotoko, sources have disclosed to FootballmadeinGhana.com.

The former Black Stars captain is being favoured ahead of Yusif Abubakar.

Kotoko are in the hunt for a new coach following management’s decision to accept the resignation of Paa Kwesi Fabin.

The management, at the end of a meeting on Sunday, have shortlisted Charles Akonnor and Yusif Abubakar following their decision to look within Ghana for their next substantive coach.

Akonnor is, however, the preferred choice as he fits the bill of a young, ambitious and a tactically astute candidate.

“We are looking within but I think the general consensus favours CK,” a management source told FootballmadeinGhana.com.

Behind the scenes, discussions are said to be ongoing.

The only thing that could scupper Akonnor’s move to Asante Kotoko might perhaps be his financial demands.

But Kotoko is noted for their ability to pay well.

Akonnor, a former Dreams FC coach is available after getting the sack at AshantiGold two months ago.
