The decision to have Boakye Agyarko dismissed from the position of Energy Minister over the controversial AMERI deal made me happy, Prof. Gyimah-Boadi has said, adding that the move was a step in the right direction.

According to the governance expert, the sack by the president sends the strongest of signals to government officials who often go unpunished for misdeeds that happen under their watch.

Not only does the dismissal send caution to government appointees but also put them on their toes to make decisions that do not short-change Ghanaians, Prof. Gyimah-Boadi said, though he was quick to add that he feels no animosity towards Boakye Agyarko in person.

“I’m happy to see the head of a senior government figure roll for something, not Boakye Agyarko in person, because of the reason high corruption still thrive in Ghana is because very often there seem to be no consequence,” he said

The former Executive Director of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) was speaking to GhanaWeb’s editor, Kwabena Kyenkyenhene Boateng when he made his thought known on the Energy Minister’s sack.

Early this month, President Akufo-Addo sacked his Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko over a power purchase deal which critics say, "makes no sense".

Head of Communications at the presidency Eugene Arhin confirmed the dismissal shortly after he had released a statement communicating the president's decision.

According to him, the dismissal of Boakye Agyarko had everything to do with the controversial renegotiated AMERI deal.
